LENT - TIME FOR RECONCILIATION: GOD KNOWS EVERYTHING WE HAVE DONE

Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman

He told her everything she ever did

Now Jesus learned that the Pharisees had heard that he was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John although in fact it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. So he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee.
Now he had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph.Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.
When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)
The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.)
10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”
13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again,14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”
16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”
17 “I have no husband,” she replied.
Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband.18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”
19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshipped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”
21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshippers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshippers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshippers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”
25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”

The Disciples Rejoin Jesus

27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”
28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

What a lovely story. Jesus sat and waited for a lost and lonely spirit. A woman, so lonely for love that she went through one partner after another, could not visit the well at the same time as the town women.
She was isolated because of her lifestyle, and probably because a number of the women were angry; she was not particular about making eyes at their menfolk.
Yet this lady was not only lonely, she yearned for God. She was a spiritual woman, and Jesus knew she would make a fine missionary.
So the woman from Sychar is ministered to by Jesus, and is so inspired that she drops her water jar [her precious water jar] without a second thought and rushes back to the town to cry out the news; has she found the Messiah?
  And indeed, she has.
As have we.
Every day, Jesus can be seen in our lives. He is not even a breath away; He is there all the time, ready to come to our aid in our loneliness, our despair, our difficulties, our financial struggles.
He knows everything we have ever done. We cannot fool the Messiah of the Universe. And why would we want to?
He can tell each of us everything we have ever done. Let us not fear this wondrous King of the Universe. Let us humbly acknowledge our broken nature, heritage of the Fall of our ancestors, and ask Him for help to personally reach holiness.
He knows everything we have ever done; yet He does not recoil. He does not reject; He merely wishes to forgive and help us move away from destructive patterns of behaviour.
He wishes us to become whole.
Turn to Him today, rest in His loving gaze, and let Him tell you all you have ever done.
Offer up to Him the sinful within yourself in a spirit of repentance and prayer, and ask for Divine Grace to change.
And be absolutely sure; you will receive it. The Lord Who ministered to a little Samaritan woman that no-one had ever heard about, and gave her a completely new life with His Love and acceptance, will surely hear our plea too.

LENT - TIME FOR RECONCILIATION; HAVE NO FEAR OF GOD

The Transfiguration

Do not fear God

17 After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.
Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. But Jesus came and touched them. “Get up,” he said. “Don’t be afraid.” When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus.

Matthew relates this beautiful story of how Jesus slowly started to reveal to the startled disciples His true being.
If Jesus had come down in all His glory as the Son of God from heaven, people would have been overawed by His magnificence and wealth.
They would never have been able to forge intimate and loving friendships with Jesus; fear and respect would have stood in the way.
Now, at this Lenten time, Jesus stands over each one of us as the Transfigured Ruler of the Universe, and gently touches our shoulders, bidding us not to fear Him.
If you have sinned, know that the luminous Lord of Creation has the power to forgive that sin; NO MATTER HOW GRAVE. NO MATTER HOW GHASTLY. NO MATTER HOW UNREPEATABLE IN POLITE SOCIETY.
Know that you are not alone. Each person struggles with sin. It is an ongoing struggle, the road to holiness; and not an easy one for the poor fallen sons and daughters of Adam and Eve.
And yet the battle is already won; Jesus the Son of God had already paid our sin-price, the unpayable debt to God. This He did by giving up His Life as a Holy Sacrifice in our stead.
So be confident. Turn to the God of Love, Mercy and Forgiveness and confess your sin within yourself to Him.
Then know that you are forgiven. He has promised this.
Make this Lent the change you have been waiting for. Grasp onto the promises made by Jesus by repentance, and change your values and lifestyle to those loved by God.
BECOME A SAINT!
GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR LENT!
Chapel of Repentance at

PRAYER CHAPEL OF REPENTANCE

Quiet your thoughts, and turn to God.
Pray the following prayer;

"Dear God, I come before You today, sinful and sorrowful. I have committed sin [here speak to God from your heart, in the quietness of your inner spirit].
It has affected my life. It has affected the lives of others. I ask you to forgive me, and to help me to forgive myself.
I promise to never carry out this action again.
I promise to try to do better in the future. Please accept my repentance, and cover my sins with Your Mercy and Forgiveness.
Please help those whom I have hurt by bringing them inner healing, and to grant them grace within their lives that the effects of my sin may be diminished or healed.
Thank you for loving me.
Amen."

Your act of repentance and forgiveness is blessed by God, and absolution [or the washing away of the effect of the sin upon your spirit] is given by God.
Go forward into your new life, resolved never to sin in this way again.
Form new habits; and check in each decision to be made what Jesus would do. If you try to do what He would do, you will make balanced decisions according to the values dear to God.

LENT - TIME FOR RECONCILIATION; PSALM 51

PSALM 51
THE JOY OF TRUE REPENTANCE

Have mercy on me, O God, in your kindness.
In your compassion blot out my offence.
O wash me more and more from my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.

My offences truly I know them;
my sin is always before me.
Against you, you alone, have I sinned;
what is evil in your sight I have done.

That you may be justified when you give sentence
and be without reproach when you judge,
O see in guilt I was born,
a sinner was I conceived.

Indeed you love truth in the heart;
then in the secret of my heart teach me wisdom.
O purify me, then I shall be clean;
O wash me, I shall be whiter than snow.

Make me hear rejoicing and gladness,
that the bones you have crushed may thrill.
From my sins turn away your face
and blot out all my guilt.

A pure heart create for me, O God,
put a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence,
nor deprive me of your holy spirit.

Give me again the joy of your help;
with a spirit of fervour sustain me,
that I may teach transgressors your ways
and sinners may return to you.

O rescue me, God, my helper,
and my tongue shall ring out your goodness.
O Lord, open my lips
and my mouth shall declare your praise.

For in sacrifice you take no delight,
burnt offering from me you would refuse,
my sacrifice, a contrite spirit.
A humbled, contrite heart you will not spurn.

In your goodness, show favour to Sion:
rebuild the walls of Jerusalem.
Then you will be pleased with lawful sacrifice,
(burnt offerings wholly consumed),
then you will be offered young bulls on your altar.

Among the penitential psalms this is one of the most important, because it captures the essence of true repentance.
The psalm grasps the real depths of sin and shows the way to restore relationship with God.
Aware of his own personal sin, David turns imploringly to God and asks for His mercy, that loving-kindness by which God reaches out with forgiveness and salvation to the sinner.

There is not one of us on earth without sin. Let us humbly accept our shortcomings this Lenten tide and turn towards the God of Mercy, and implore His forgiveness for our sins. Then let us do as Jesus told so many He forgave of their sins, "Go and sin no more." In other words, don't do it again. That is the simple acknowledgement we need to make for Divine Forgiveness; repentance and a changed life.

We can do it.
Blessings on your Lent!

LENT - TIME FOR RECONCILIATION

Joel Chapter 2, Verses 12 to 14

Rend Your Heart

12 “Even now,” declares the Lord,
“return to me with all your heart,
with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
13 Rend your heart
    and not your garments.
Return to the Lord your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate,
slow to anger and abounding in love,
and he relents from sending calamity.
14 Who knows? He may turn and relent
    and leave behind a blessing
grain offerings and drink offerings
    for the Lord your God.

Prophet Joel reminds us that God is a gracious God. He is a loving Father, Who will forgive anything - ANTHING. Just return to Him, repentant and resolute to show your change of heart.
Don't fear - more can be made right than the world could ever dream of.

LENT - TIME TO SPRING CLEAN

SINCE EARLY DAYS CHRISTIANS HAVE OBSERVED WITH GREAT DEVOTION THE TIME OF OUR LORD'S PASSION, DEATH AND RESURRECTION. It is the custom of the Church to prepare for this by a season of penitence and self-denial.

Ashes reminder of mortality
Lent begins with a service for Ash Wednesday. The ceremony of the ashes is a sign of repentance and a symbol of mortality.
It is customary, but not essential, to produce the ashes by burning the palm crosses of the previous year. This may be done before the service.
The ashes should be placed in a bowl on or near the communion table.

By placing ashes on our foreheads at the beginning of Lent, we simply remember the truth that we are not destined to live eternally on earth.
Rather we are pilgrims going through time on earth, preparatory to living eternally in our final destination of heaven, in the company of our Father, God.

So as the symbolic ash is placed upon our foreheads, we pray,
"Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return".
In other words, our human bodies, created from earthly substances, are destined to return to the earth once our souls, our spirits have moved on.

This is not tragedy, but reality. It is practical to remind ourselves annually that our personal beings comprise far more than our external bodies.
We are eternal spirits which can choose where we wish to spend our eternity - with God, or in the absence of God's Presence.

It is good eternal planning and common sense to take steady care of our spirits, because good life and behaviour according to the values of Jesus Christ assist us to access the eternal kingdom of heaven.

Benefit
Lenten practices have great benefit for each person's life, body, mind and spirit.
If we undertake Lent with sincerity and devotion, we undertake spring cleaning which purifies metaphysical clutter which accumulate in our souls.

Purification
Serious commitment to purification of our inner selves leads us to identify and deal with addictions, obsessions and compulsive behaviour.

Lent is the time to confront bad habits into which we have drifted [by means of meditation and reflection], deal with them [inner resolve and purification], make reparation for the sin we have committed through these faults which have knock-on effect on other people [repentance and penitence] and create new habits in keeping with Christ's values [renewal].

Confronting bad habits
There are various forms of bad habits, including the following seven sins
- Envy, or jealousy
- Gluttony, or over eating and drinking to the extent that harm to the body is caused
- Greed or avarice; wanting far more than can personally be used, sometimes to the detriment of others in need
- Lust, or pursuance of others because of their physical attraction, without true love or care for their feelings or lives
- Pride, or undue belief in personal superiority without humility before God
- Sloth, or laziness and refusal to carry out the tasks which are personal duty
- Wrath, or undue bad temper and emotional or physical violence towards others

Original sin
Due to the original sin which the fall of early humanity fell into, we are often subject to an inner force which moves us into the wrong direction.
Lent helps us to refocus our spiritual compass in the right direction again - our true north being the Laws of God [the Ten Commandments] and the values of Jesus Christ [laid out clearly in the four Gospels, or New Testament].

Grace of God
Continual effort is necessary to control the inner movement of our ego, and allow the presence of the grace of God to inspire and direct our thoughts, desires and actions.

Strength
Lent gives us the opportunity to practise disciplining our spiritual and mental muscles so that, when we experience temptation to do wrong, we are able to resist and do what is right.

Fasting
One way in which Christians strengthen is through fasting and abstinence.
By control of physical appetite by denying untoward greed for food and drink, we are strengthening our spiritual selves.
Fasting does not mean self-denial to the point of anorexia. That defeats the purpose, as this places the health of the body at risk.
As in all things, moderation is the key.

Practice self-control by giving up some food or drink that is personally loved, but not essential for bodily health and functioning.
Here is where reflection is important. If alcohol has become so personally important that alcoholism is impending, this is a definite area of fasting to be addressed.
If food has become so personally important that health and mobility is being compromised, this is an area which needs to be addressed.

Another form of fasting is in the words we speak. If we use the Name of the Lord in vain, we need to address the commandment to keep the Name of God holy.
If we use blasphemy or curses in every sentence, this is a habit which needs to be addressed as not in keeping with true holiness.
If we use sarcasm, sneers, undue gossip or unkind words towards others, fasting from unkindness and the unkind word needs to be addressed.

Prayer
Spend time in prayer. Ask Jesus Christ what to address in your personal life. Then draw up a Lenten programme to address your challenges.

Each person's challenge is different. We cannot make one plan for all. Also, what may be a personal issue one year may be fully resolved the next, with a new challenge.

Christ will help you to know which spiritual road to walk, when you spend time in prayer.

Positive actions
Make a resolution to do some good deed to help another in some way. So Lent is not simply a time of emotional and spiritual spring-cleaning, but also a time of carrying out good deeds in the Name of the Lord.

Spiritual reading
Good spiritual reading is a great aid to a life of steady direction and holiness. There is no greater aid than to read the New Testament.
The life of Jesus Christ gives us the template which we can follow when making difficult decisions.
"What would Jesus do", is often seen on bracelets - WWJD. Indeed.
We learn what Jesus would do, when we read what He did.
So spend at least ten minutes a day in reading the Word of God.
You can increase the time as you draw from the joy that is the Life of Jesus Christ on our earth.

Good luck with your Lent!

Ten Commandments, Exodus 20; 1-17
