TWELVE READINGS OR LESSONS FOR USE IN CHRISTMAS MASSES, WORSHIP SERVICES, CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT, CHORAL SERVICES, PRAYER AND BIBLE STUDIES [PART ONE ]

HERE FIND TWELVE READINGS OR LESSONS FOR USE IN CHRISTMAS MASSES, WORSHIP SERVICES, CAROLS BY CANDLELIGHT, CHORAL SERVICES, PRAYER AND BIBLE STUDIES.

PRIEST;
'Beloved in Christ, at this Christmastide let it be our care and delight to listen again to the Angels' message, and to go in  heart and mind to Bethlehem to see the Babe lying in a manger.

Let us together read and mark in Holy Scripture the history of the loving purposes of GOD from the first days of our disobedience until the glorious Redemption brought us by this Holy Child.

Let us pray for the needs of the whole world.
Let us pray for peace on earth, and goodwill among all GOD's people.
Let us pray for unity and love within the One Church Jesus came to build.
Let us pray for all here in our gathering today, and for all our neighbours and especially for those  in need.

And because this would rejoice the Heart of Jesus, let  us remember - in His Name - the poor and helpless; the cold, hungry and oppressed; the sick, and those who mourn; for those who still await the Word of God; and for those who by sin have grieved Jesus' Heart of love.

Let us remember before GOD all those who rejoice with  us, upon another shore and in a greater light, that multitude which none can number. Their hope was in GOD the LORD.

Let us humbly offer these prayers and praises up to the Throne of Heaven, in the words which JESUS Himself has taught us;

'Our Father, Who art in Heaven,
 Hallowed be Thy Name;
 Thy Kingdom come,
 Thy Will be Done,
 On earth as it is in Heaven.
 Give us this day our daily bread,
 And forgive us our trespasses,
 As we forgive those who trespass against us.
 And lead us not into temptation,
 But deliver us from evil.
 For Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory,
 For ever and ever,
 Amen.'

The Congregation  now sits.
[The Readers of the Lessons should be appointed prior to the service; and each reader should read reverently from the the Holy Scripture.

Each reading should begin after a preceding Carol; and be announced by the Reader.
At the end of the Reading, the Reader should pause and say: Thanks be to GOD.

FIRST LESSON; Reading from the Book of Genesis,
Chapter 2, verses 8 to 15
God announces in the Garden of Eden that the
seed of woman shall bruise the serpent's head

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?”
10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”
11 And he said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?
12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”
13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?”
The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,
“Cursed are you above all livestock
    and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
    and you will eat dust
    all the days of your life.

15

And I will put enmity
    between you and the woman,
    and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
    and you will strike his heel.”
SECOND LESSON; Reading from the Book of Genesis, Chapter 22, verses 15 to 18
God promises to faithful Abraham that in his
seed shall the nations of the earth be blessed.
15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time 16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”

THIRD LESSON; Reading from the
Prophet Isaiah, Chapter 9, verses 1 to 7
Christ's birth and kingdom are foretold by Isaiah

1Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations, by the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan—

The people walking in darkness
    have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
    a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
    and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
    as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
    when dividing the plunder.
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
    you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
    the bar across their shoulders,
    the rod of their oppressor.
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
    and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
    will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,
    to us a son is given,
    and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
    Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
    Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
    there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
    and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
    with justice and righteousness
    from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the Lord Almighty
    will accomplish this

FOURTH LESSON; Reading from the
Prophet Isaiah, Chapter 9, verses 1 to 10
The peace that Christ will bring is foreshown

1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
    from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.
The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—
    the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and of might,
    the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord
and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.

He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,
    or decide by what he hears with his ears;
but with righteousness he will judge the needy,
    with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
    with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
Righteousness will be his belt
    and faithfulness the sash around his waist.
The wolf will live with the lamb,
    the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling[a] together;
    and a little child will lead them.
The cow will feed with the bear,
    their young will lie down together,
    and the lion will eat straw like the ox.
The infant will play near the cobra’s den,
    and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.
They will neither harm nor destroy
    on all my holy mountain,
for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord
    as the waters cover the sea.
10 In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.

FIFTH LESSON; Reading from the
Prophet Micah, Chapter 5, verses 2 to 5
The Prophet Micah foretells the glory of little Bethlehem;
a promised Ruler will come forth

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
    though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
    one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
    from ancient times.”
Therefore Israel will be abandoned
    until the time when she who is in labor bears a son,
and the rest of his brothers return
    to join the Israelites.
He will stand and shepherd his flock
    in the strength of the Lord,
    in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God.
And they will live securely, for then his greatness
    will reach to the ends of the earth.
And he will be our peace

SIXTH LESSON;
Reading from the Gospel of St Luke,
 Chapter 1, verses 26 to 38
The Angel Gabriel salutes the Blessed Virgin Mary

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[b] the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”
38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

SEVENTH LESSON; Reading from
the Prophet Isaiah, Chapter 60,
verses 1 to 7
The prophet in exile foresees the coming of the
glory of the Lord.

1 “Arise, shine, for your light has come,
    and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.
See, darkness covers the earth
    and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the Lord rises upon you
    and his glory appears over you.
Nations will come to your light,
    and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

“Lift up your eyes and look about you:
    All assemble and come to you;
your sons come from afar,
    and your daughters are carried on the hip.
Then you will look and be radiant,
    your heart will throb and swell with joy;
the wealth on the seas will be brought to you,
    to you the riches of the nations will come.
Herds of camels will cover your land,
    young camels of Midian and Ephah.
And all from Sheba will come,
    bearing gold and incense
    and proclaiming the praise of the Lord.
All Kedar’s flocks will be gathered to you,
    the rams of Nebaioth will serve you;
they will be accepted as offerings on my altar,
    and I will adorn my glorious temple.

EIGHTH LESSON; Reading from the
Gospel of St Matthew,
Chapter 1, verses 18 to 25
St Matthew tells of the Birth of Jesus, the Son of God

18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
